2020 Silver Quill Awards Winners

Dear colleagues,

Submitting your work for a peer review process in any awards programme is brave and commendable. Entering the Quills Awards programme, shows that you have what it takes! Your work is not only evaluated against the standard of the entries but against global best practice, it is a step above courageous! We commend you for taking the effort of writing up your case study in the format and submitting it to the Silver Quill panel for evaluation. We received a total of 54 entries into the 2020 Silver Quill Awards.

This year, the evaluation panel noticed a couple of trends we would like to share with you.

There is a marked difference between the Quills and other award programmes that African communication professionals have access too. Other award programmes evaluate creative implementation, and trends based on the entries received, and assess the quality of campaigns against each other. The Quills require strategic thinking, research, business and communication results, and the creative work being placed in a strategic context. The key to winning Quills is brilliant work on a strategic business level and on a creative tactical communication level.

Submitting meaningful strategic work with well-developed output and outcome objectives stands out. Our communication industry is alive and well, delivering global excellence.

This year, we allocated 13 Awards of Excellence and 20 Awards of Merit for genuinely innovative and ground-braking strategic communication work!

On behalf of IABC Africa Region it is my great pleasure to congratulate our 2020 Silver Quill Awards of Excellence and Merit Winners!

We did notice that some entrants used the same work plan in a couple of different categories. It is highly recommended that you revise the entries with the specific theme of the category you are entering, as the evaluators keep this angle in mind while they evaluate.

Goals and objectives are still the section that trips up most entries that do not receive awards. General statements, lack of research, and lack of very specific timed, numbered and outcome objectives are unfortunately still areas that let entries down. Most of the entries are potential winners, but packaging the elements in the correct format, following best practice, will enhance most non-winning entries.

The skills category received many entries, and we would like to encourage our peers to keep on entering in this category where you can showcase your creative work, delivered within a strategic context.

The Silver Quills in the African region is specifically timed and designed to recognise our African peers, and to allow you to refine your entry for submission to the Global Gold Quill programme. We highly encourage you to do so. The early bird deadline is 8 January 2021. Click on this link https://gq.iabc.com/ for more information.

Once again, congratulations to all of the 2020 Silver Quill Awards winners!

Best wishes,

Mari Lee
