The International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) will announce the winner of the South African 2011 Excellence in Communication Leadership (EXCEL) Award at its annual conference, being held from 12 to 14 October at The Carousel north of Pretoria.

Each year, the association honours a top-level executive for his/her contribution to business communication. This contribution can include initiating, directing, supporting or sustaining outstanding and effective communication programmes. The award is frequently given to a chief executive officer, managing director or general manager.

The international EXCEL Award programme is now in its fourth decade, and is largely recognised as the IABC's highest honour to be bestowed on a non-member. There are no restrictions or biases based on size of organisation or budget. Nominations for this international award are made by both IABC members and non-members.

Evaluation criteria

The role of a leader in communicating effectively with internal and external stakeholders during tough times is crucial to a company's long-term success. The leader is charged with helping people understand how the economic downturn is affecting the company and employees. With the growth of social media, there are now even more tools available for leaders to reach their constituents.
The Africa region of IABC is therefore looking to recognise a candidate who has demonstrated vision and leadership in his/her commitment to excellent communication, in recent years.

EXCEL nominees are evaluated on the following points:

1. Demonstration of exceptional leadership, management and communication skills.
2. Some experience in communicating with global or multicultural audiences is preferred.
3. Use of a communication strategy that demonstrates creativity and innovation and that contributes to the business success of the organisation.
4. Commitment to the communication programmes for all of the organisation's audiences, both internal and external, and at local, national and international levels.
5. Effective personal communication with all of these audiences. Candidates must be shown to have participated in communication, not simply directed communication staff in their efforts.
6. Commitment to the highest ethical and professional standards.

A surge of new technologies and social media innovations is altering the media landscape. It’s easier than ever to reach a large audience, but harder than ever to really connect with it.

Find out how to do just this – and do it better than anyone else – at this year’s Africa conference for the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC).

This year’s conference, being held place from 12 to 14 October at The Carousel Casino and Entertainment World north of Pretoria, will explore how local and international communicators are incorporating social media and digital tools into their communication strategies and campaigns.

"With corporate communication stakeholders becoming increasingly social media savvy, the playing fields are leveling out when it comes to the flow of messages within and outside of an organisation," says Ros Jones, Regional Director of IABC Africa. “A revolution is on the rise and we can either be part of it or be left behind.”

Presentations this year will include, among others:

• Best practices: Internet law for online communicators.
• Building online communities: What a 60s rock ‘n roll band can teach us.
• How communication and its delivery mechanisms have evolved over the past decade in South Africa.
• Step-by-step: Crafting the ultimate online PR campaign.
• Beyond the click-rate: measuring true return on investment online.

The highlight of the conference will be a panel debate that will pitch some of the country’s most well-respected communication experts against each other in what is sure to be a heated discussion about the pros, cons and general state of traditional vs new media in the corporate communication field.
The debate will take place in the ring of the Carousel’s historical boxing arena – home to some of the most hotly contested heavy-weight boxing matches held in South Africa. Participants will include the likes of Joe Tlholoe (press ombudsman), Alistair Fairweather (Mail & Guardian Online) and Mike Stopforth (Cerebra), among others.

The full programme and details of the event are available on www.iabc.co.za. Book now, as seats are limited.

Event organiser, Mari Lee, ABC, CEO of DevCom, said “The World Cup Lessons learned event was absolutely mind-blowing, and I’m sure none of the communicators had a full picture of their impact and the amount of ‘behind the scenes’ work that our world class communicators invested to make this global event such a success’.

Facilitating the day-long session was Daniel Munslow, Chief Communications Officer at Talk2Us, with a long and distinguished list of speakers, including Dr. Tobeka Boltina (Novartis), Linda Hamman (Talk2Us), Mari Lee (DevCom), Geraldine Frohling (SARS), Julie Wells (City of Tshwane), Francois Stremmelaar (Royal Elephant Hotel), Ilze van der Merwe (Preferential Communication), Janine Lazarus (Media expert), Ingrid Jenson (Gautrain), Brigadier Sally de Beer (SAPS), Ashley Theron (Child Welfare South Africa), Ilse Blank (Deloitte) and Yolande DeNysschen (MSL World Wide).
